About RothLA

Program History

The Rothenberger Leadership Academy was launched collaboratively by Tom Gilliam, RN, MBA and David Rothenberger, MD under the name “Emerging Physician Leadership Program” (EPLP) in 2008. The program was an extension of the Rothenberger Lectureship that honors Dr. David Rothenberger's legacy of exemplary mentorship and leadership in patient safety and quality and organizational culture.

The goal of EPLP was to create sustained organizational impact by building a community of well-rounded, adaptive, servant leaders at the University of Minnesota. EPLP was designed as a longitudinal, cohort-based, three-year program, with 12 modules taking place over a day and a half each.

The University of Minnesota Medical School, Fairview and University of Minnesota Physicians jointly funded the program cost as EPLP quickly established itself as a highly effective and sought-after leadership development program for the organization.

Transition to RothLA

After a very successful run of 12 years with over 154 graduates from four cohorts, the program underwent a significant redesign in 2019. The new curriculum was modified in order to more effectively meet the needs of the merged clinical enterprise of M Health Fairview.

The 6th cohort of the newly named Rothenberger Leadership Academy, or RothLA, is launching in 2024 with 36 cohort members.

The Members of the 6th Rothenberger Leadership Cohort are:

During residency training, I was actively involved in medical education and teaching as Chief Resident. While working at Hennepin County Mental Health Center and Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, I have supervised the University of Minnesota, Hennepin County Medical Center Psychiatry Residents and Mayo Clinic Child Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry Fellows.

I am board-certified in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry. I am passionate about working with young adults and adolescents with substance use disorders.  I see my role as a diagnostician who uses mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational, and psychodynamic approaches, coupled with responsible use of psychiatric medications to assist with symptom management as well as collaboration with support systems.

In my career, I have worked with diverse populations, including children in the welfare and juvenile justice systems, various settings, including community-based clinics and residential programs. I have extensive experience working with young adults and adolescents with substance use and co-morbid disorders. I enjoy working on a multidisciplinary team to provide my patients with the most comprehensive care, and I appreciate the importance of family collaboration. I believe strongly in the psychiatrist's role as a diagnostician and the prudent and responsible use of psychiatric medications to assist symptom management. I prescribe controlled substances judiciously.

Outside of my clinical practice I am interested in intersections of use of documentary photography and narratives  to promote resilience and gratitude. I have led documentary photography and oral history projects with grant support from the Minnesota State Arts Board, Metro Regional Arts Council and the Minnesota Historical Society.

University of Minnesota Department of Neurosurgery
Dr. Robert McGovern

Dr. McGovern is a functional/stereotactical neurosurgeon who specializes in treating patients with epilepsy and in providing deep brain stimulation surgery for relieving symptoms in patients with movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. He is splitting his time between the university (two days) and Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center (three days).

He believes there are three important aspects to practicing neurosurgery in an academic setting: patient care, teaching and research. "When it comes to patient care, I try to be as honest and transparent as I can about what goes into a surgery," he explained. "It's a journey you take together with your patient, so no one is surprised on either end."

From a teaching standpoint, Dr. McGovern believes that, "educating patients, residents and medical students is one of the most important things we do in an academic practice. What's especially nice at the VA is that there is only one resident for each six-month rotation, which gives you an opportunity to develop an intimate relationship. It's a great way to teach."

Dr. McGovern and his family live in the Edina/Richfield, MN, area. When he has spare time, he likes to play with his son, find new restaurants to eat at with his wife, stay active and run the marathons. He also is a passionate sports fan who loves all sports, but particularly baseball and his "beloved" Red Sox.
